showed several mines, but Apache Jack
said it was the
highest an hardest to find. Everything fit most of what Mrs.
Thomas was suppose to have been told by Waltz. The map did show a
stone face or head, I didn't see that, but then half the boulders could
have been described as a mans head, or maybe the quake rolled it down
into the canyon like Cec thought. According to the Dutchman an
the map the head would have been on the far side of the canyon at the
head of the ridge. Lots of rocks up there. but not sure I would
call one a mans head, or some might say several looked like the head of
a person, But we were in a canyon everything
else fit. not far from water. We
decided not to go into the canyon or cross it, till tomorrow
morning. How long would it take to find it one we were with in a
couple hundred feet of it. A long time. When the Solders found
it, it wasnt hiden and the area had mineing crews in there not to long
before. But now, I would say if you were in 6 ft of the lower shaft,
you could crawl past it. So we figured at least four
days, starting at the top shaft and working down. Remember there
are snakes in that area, so no one is going to get in a hurry.
We headed back to camp. when we were walking back through the boulders, I had to take a break to relieve myself. I walked around a couple big boulders as to be alone. When I walked back I saw little foot prints in my foot prints an put out on the ground, a cigarette with a white filter. I got Cec an Everett an showed them some one had been with me in the boulders. Yep Cec said: Little foots calling card, he wants us to know he's here watching an it's time to leave, If he wanted to watch us with out us knowing, he would have or shot us if needed. Na he just gave us notice to go.
At camp we made some coffee an took a nap for an hour or so. It was about 4 or 5 pm when we heard it. Cec said hey do you guys hear that? yeah sounds like picking coming from where we had just been. In the mountains noise travels and it was loud an clear picking. Cec said: must be the kids are back, Strange Little Foot stands for that. Yeah an the old prospectors sure don't stand for anyone getting into that area. Well Everett said: we got two choices, we have time to make it back to the car before dark, or we spend another night freezing, when it gets night. Cec an I agreed we might as well get back, we knew if we stayed the night, trouble could happen in the form of gun fire. Well at least our packs were a bit lighter. Nothing unusual happened on the way back to the car, an we made good time.
We started back on our long drive to
Oregon. Cec was a very cautious man, He had spent a lot of
time
on this prodject an didn't trust people easly. But as I got to
know Cec better we became very close friends. He started telling
me more an more about the Dutchman mine. Cec said: I have a good friend
that is married to an Apache girl, she lived on the San Carlous
Reveration an they visit there quite offten. Cec Said his friend
had told him, he would't disclose any tribal information, but he did
tell Cec the Indians also had a vein of gold, they called the Apachie
shrine. Cec said the man told him a lot about Little Foot.
Little Foots mother was Mexican an his Father Apachie. Little
Foot was sixty seven years old an in charge of 35 men guarding the
scarade bural grounds and the Apachie shrine. Little Foot used
a trail called the Apachie trail to get from the San
Carlous to
the Needle.
We made a couple trips to the Superstitons, but got
nowhere, we spent a bad night with some one hanging around camp.
then it was clear we were being followed. There were lots of
people around, so we went up on black top. and looked for the cave.
spent a day looking with a mineral locator where Cec thought the old
foundation had been. We had planed on going back anyway so we
left. But Cec passed away an we never made it back again.
