How the Spanish Found the
Lost Dutchman Mine

Page 2.  Finding Gold

Cec told me the Spanish worked their way up the canyons until they found out cropings.
there were 3 or 4 on a black toped mountain an two or three others.   The Spanish mined the veins, which were chimney veins. this happened around 1847
At first they got along with the Indians.  Then for some reason the Indians got mad an attacked theboulder canyon miners.

Cec said: years ago an old Indian called  Jack, told the story of what happened to a writer.   Jack said he was twelve years old at the time his people attacked the Spanish miners.  Jack said his people had got along very good with the miners. but something happened that was not talked about and the Indian leaders ordered an attack to chase off the Spanish.  Jack said: the battle lasted  four days there was more than a hundred miners.  and the last of the miners were killed  in front of Superstition Mountain on the desert.  Then the women an children droped the miners tools into the mines on Black Top, which were about ninety feet deep, then they made home made cement called gilichie, poured that in then filled the rest of the vertical shafts with dirt and gravel.  Jack said: there was one mine they did not fill in,  It was so hard to get to, and almost impossible to find, that the older Indians said leave it open, because we may need gold someday it's worth alot to white men.  A few days after Jack told his story he was found dead in his hut. he had been poisoned.

The Spanish tell the same story.  according to the Spanish three or four managed to escape the attack by hideing.  and got back to Mexico.  these men said they fought the Indians an took as much gold as they could with them,  some held up in a cave, they said the cave was where the black top mountain looks different.  they poured some of the gold on the cave floor an covered it with dirt.   Then taking the rest of the gold with them, they fought til the final battle on the desert outside of the mountains.  Cec said years later a man with a mineral locator found about twenty five thousand in gold in front of Superstition Mountain, I think the year the man was suppost to have found the gold was in the 1960's. about the time I got involved in looking.
