The
Dutchman and the
Lost Dutchman Mine
Page 3. The Dutchman
Cec Went on to tell me how he had heard the
Dutchman
found the mine, accually he didn't find it he was shown where it
was. The Dutchmans name was Jacob Waltz, he an his friend
Jacob Weiser, were in a cantena in Mexico where they met Miguel
Peralta. Miguel got to be friends with Waltz an Weiser the year
was around 1880's. One day he told them he had been to gold mines when
he was a boy with his Dad, He needed money to buy some cattle for
his ranch, but now the mines are located in Arizona, so the only way he
could get any gold from it, was to sneed in and out, he told Waltz an
Weiser the Indians watched the area. He told of the attack on the
miners. The three men agreed to go to the mines together and to
split anything they might find. The three men got to the
Superstition Mountains and could only find one of the mines. ( as the
others had been filled in) what they found was a mine with
two entrances. one at the top and another down a bluff in a
canyon below the mine. The picked at the gold which is suppost to
be a vein eighteen inches across. Cec said maybe they just broke
up tailings which still had gold in them left by the Miners.
After about three weeks the three men thought they had about ten
thousand in gold, at the price of gold in Mexico at that time.
(at todays prices it would probably be around 200,000 worth of
gold). Miguel said there was plenty of money there to buy the
cattle he needed to get this ranch back on its feet. I he could have
the gold, he would return to Mexico and Waltz and Weiser could have the
mine. The Dutchman and Weiser agreed that was fine with
them. So Miguel left with the ten thousand in gold.
The Dutchman (Waltz) and Weiser kept picking out
gold. soon they had four cans about the size of bean cans full of
gold. They needed more supplies and food, So the
Dutchman went to Phoenix. Weiser stayed at the camp. When
the Dutchman returned he found the camp astrew and Weiser was
gone. He looked and couldnt find Weiser anywhere. Soon he
found the cans of gold where he an Weiser had hid them in a crack in
some rocks. Waltz took the four cans and buried three of them at the
corner of the old foundation. Then he took one can with him and
left the mountains never to return. Cecil said: there are stories
of him going in and out after more gold, Cec said: these stroies are
confused with the shoe maker mine and other lost gold mines. the
Dutchman relised his partner had been attacked at the camp. An
the Duchman was scared and had no intention of going back into thoes
mountains. Later he found out what had happened to his
partner. Weiser had crawled into a locial Ranch an died with an
arrow in his back a few days later. Why was he left
wounded, well no one would have thought he would have made it far
and Cec figured it was kind of a slow death revenge killing.
