Page 6. Gold Hunters
While Cec was at Ed's
camp he heard picking. Ed said he had heard the picking before
about once every couple weeks. A fellow named of George who also
stayed at Ed's camp on week ends, Went with Cec and Ed to see if they
could tell where the picking was comeing from. they only got a
ways and encountered a girl and a guy with guns watching the
trail. Later George told Cec he had waited at first water where
the cars were parked and followed the girl. later he went to her
home and told her parents he would like to talk with her. She was
scared her parents would find out what was going on. george told her he
wouldnt say anything if she told him what she had been doing acting as
a guard in the mountains. She said the Boy who was doing the
picking had been deer hunting, had wounded a deer. he followed
the deer adn ended up in a place very hard to get to crawling on his
hand an knees. He spoted a old mine shaft (cave) and
investagated. then he took some of the tailings and left.
the tailings he sold for four hundred dollars when gold was still $36
an oz. So a couple times a month he would take his two friends to
guard for him and would spend a hour or two picking. then they
would sell the gold. she said he left her and the other guy to
guard an had never accually shown them where the mine was. Sound
carrys a long way in the mountains so she thought he was with in a
quarter mile of where he left them to guard, because he would
only be gone about ten minutes then they would hear him picking.
All of a sudden the boys parents decided to move to L.A. maybe the
Indians has suggested it to be a good move. in the late 1960's
the boy had returned to Arizona and was found dead, Cec
said.
